Whole Wheat Caraway Crackers
Quick ‘n’ tasty after-school snack

The Green Spoon•May 27, 2025
Crackers make great snacks! They’re endlessly adaptable, can lean either savory or sweet, and can pack a punch when it comes to flavor and nutrition. So, we’ve assembled some of our favorite crackers and some ideas for some delicious and wholesome spreadable toppings below.
We made an effort to offer a range of choices price-wise, but we understand that some of the above cracker suggestions are expensive—especially considering the volume of snacks our children consume over the course of a week. If you’re feeling a bit more ambitious or have a little extra time on your hands, homemade crackers are a great and cost-effective project. You could try our addictively crunchy Multiseed Mushroom Crackers or you could try this very simple recipe.

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.
Put the butter (3 oz), whole wheat flour (2 ½ cups), caraway seeds (2 Tbsp), and salt (1 tsp) in a bowl. With your hands, combine until crumbs form.
Add some of the water (5–7 Tbsp), a little at a time to form a ball. If the dough is too dry add more water, if it's too wet add more flour. Try not to overwork the dough as it can make the crackers tough.
Roll out the dough on a clean, floured surface to about a ½ cm thickness. Using a cookie cutter or a knife cut into circles, diamonds, or any shape you like, and evenly place the pieces on the prepared tray.
Bake for 15–20 minutes, until the crackers are lightly brown. Leave to cool completely and transfer into an airtight container. Store for up to 10 days.
